The three possible hydroxynonachlorodiphenyl ethers (HO-CI9-DPEs) present in pentachlorophenol as manufacturing by-products were isolated by high pressure liquid chromatography in high purity (> 99%). Mass spectra were obtained of 2-HO-CI9-DPE, 3-HO-CI9-DPE and 4-HO-CI9-DPE, and their methylated derivatives, 2-MeO-CI9-DPE, 3-MeO-CI9-DPE and 4-MeO-CI9-DPE. Fragmentation mechanisms have been postulated.
