Adults of the apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonelia (Walsh), cannot survive and reproduce on the substances usually present on the surface of fruit and foliage but can survive when aphis honeydew is present. The fecundity of flies fed on honeydew was similar to that obtained from flies fed on artificial diets. Honeydew may possibly be the principle natural source of the adult nutrient requirements.
