Techniques for continuous culturing of the apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), in the laboratory are described. The adults were reared in 18×l2×12-inch cages on a diet of sucrose, an amino acid mixture, vitamins, minerals, and water. They were maintained at 72 ± 2°F, 80 ± 5% RH, and 16 hours of light. They oviposited in stored apples from late fall to midsummer and in field apples for the remaining period. The first generation of adults yielded about 45 pupae per female. About 130 days were required to complete the life cycle. Three generations have been reared with the described techniques.
