High-volume ventilation and lipopolysaccharide trigger distinct lung gene profiles, decoupling biophysical from biochemical injury.
Why the study?
Physiologic and morphologic manifestations of acute lung injury from distinct insults are often indistinguishable, necessitating molecular profiling to identify injury-specific gene expression.
Functional genomics can identify unique molecular fingerprints of acute lung injury caused by different insults, decoupling biophysical from biochemical injury.

Santos et al. (2008) studied Acute lung injury (n=24). Lipopolysaccharide, hemorrhagic shock, and high-volume ventilation vs. Sham operation and low tidal volume (6 mL/kg) ventilation was evaluated on Differential gene expression profiles (microarray analysis). Microarray analysis of rat lungs revealed unique gene expression patterns characterizing exposure to lipopolysaccharide (1,013 genes) and high-volume ventilation (332 genes), decoupling biophysical from biochemical injury.
