The mean density of Oxyethira albiceps freely suspended in the river 900 m from Lake Taupo in mid March, 1987, was 3.62 larvae m-3. The concentration declined during the next 3 months during which a significant positive correlation existed between the mean density of larvae and water temperature. During a 24 h cycle on 13-14 March, 1987, the density of larvae 1 h 15 min after sunset was significantly higher than at all other sampling times.
