A ligand can play an important role in the activity of the molybdenum-catalyzed epoxidation. Molybdenum complex was changed to the reactive intermediate through the reaction of catalyst with t-BuOOH. Oxalate, edta, and phenoxyl groups were selected as ligands. The phenoxyl group was most effective for the epoxidation. This effect was interpreted by the HSAB concept.
