The influence of indentation size in relation to the associated fracture in semi-brittle materials is discussed, with particular reference to oriented glassy polymers. It is concluded that a strong correlation should exist between the critical indentation size for fracture and the degree of molecular orientation, and this has been observed in hot-drawn PMMA.
