The aim of this study is to suggest that the Thai leftwing movement, both urban and rural, is the natural outgrowth of recent Thai social history; that there is a historic connection between the ongoing urban leftwing movement of today, whether in or out of the recently-granted parliament, and the increasingly powerful liberation movements in the rural areas; finally, that the October 1973 student uprising in Thailand must be interpreted as a reemergence of the urban leftwing movement after a long period of extreme repression, and with more widespread support than ever before.
