An extensive investigation has been made of eight jets with a degree of swirl varying from weak to very strong. The jets were either isothermal or heated. The measurements include both the mean and fluctuating kinematic and thermal fields. The theoretical analysis explains the observed axial velocity and turbulent shear stress profiles. The theoretical limiting case where affine profiles are possible is discussed.
