Melt spinning of poly‐L, DL‐lactide 70/30 has been studied. Fiber having diameter lower than 120 micron exhibited tensile modulus and strength in the range of 3–4 GPa and 130–180 MPa, respectively. Maximum attainable modulus and strength of 4.7 GPa and 205 MPa were predicted, according to a proposed equation in dependence on the draw ratio. In vitro degradation performed in PBS solution at 37 °C, showed that after 4 weeks fibers maintained adequate properties for tissue engineering applications.
