The potential of various chiral dirhodium complexes to discriminate racemic methyl phenyl sulfoxide is demonstrated by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Complexation occurs via a HOMO–LUMO interaction. Extraordinarily large signal dispersions (Δν) are observed with Rh2(mandelate)4. This can be rationalized by a conformational fixation of the sulfoxide by intramolecular hydrogen bonding.
