Poly(α‐isobutyl‐L‐aspartate), abbreviated PAIBLA, is a helical polymer. In this paper we evaluate its potential to form liquid crystals. We have observed highly birefringent solutions in helicogenic solvents as chloroform and dichloromethane. They were further characterized by PMR spectroscopy, and hydrodynamic and optical measurements. From these solutions, solid films were cast which displayed a uniplanar orientation with helical molecules lying parallel to the film surface. We conclude that PAIBLA is capable of forming lyotropic liquid crystals with a cholesteric structure.
