The main constituents of peat include floral remains (in a various degree of humification), peat humus, and mineral constituents of biotic and non-biotic origin. The organic content is considered to be the main parameter that decides about physical and chemical properties of peat. However, the content and composition of mineral constituents of silted (high-ash) peats may cause differences in chemical and physical properties in comparison to the unsilted (low-ash) peats. Therefore, the identification of mineral content, as well as chemical and mineral composition of inorganic constituents, is essential to predict the properties of silted peats. The aim of this study is to determine the content, composition and the origin of mineral constituents of three fens from the Lubartów Plateau (Eastern Poland).
