A novel method for the preparation of ultrafine Fe2O3 particles in a polymeric (PTFE) matrix is described. Mössbauer spectra allow the particles to be identified as α-Fe2O3 showing superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature. Electron paramagnetic resonance is investigated between liquid nitrogen and room temperatures. The resonance linewidth is found to be independent of temperature, and approximately inversely proportional to the particles volume (as determined by electron microscopy). The results indicate a strong size dependence of the anisotropy constant K.
