The composition of fluorine–zirconium species on wool is dependent on the method of exhaustion. The limiting-oxygen index (LOI) of wool is not influenced by small amounts of zirconium, but, above about 0.4% zirconium (o.w.f.), there is a linear increase of LOI with zirconium content up to a maximum value. It is confirmed that fluorozirconates and fluorotitanates on wool undergo extensive loss of fluoride on laundering.
