Self-assembled alanine-appended organogels 1 and 2 are found to have right- and left-handed helical structures, respectively. According to FT-IR, powder-XRD, and 1H NMR experiments, the intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction between amide groups (not shown in here), and π−π stacking between two azobenzene moieties act as an effective deriving force to form gel in organic solvents.
