Aminopolycarboxylate complexes of Fe(III) and Cu(II) may have an interesting natural water photochemistry. As a convenient model system, the photodecarboxylation of ferric–EDTA complexes was studied at 30.0 °C using 3500 Å light. The hydrolytic forms present at pH of 8.00 and 9.00 were observed to have quantum yields below 0.10 and varying from species to species. The oxo-bridged dimer was unreactive. This is discussed from the viewpoint of the changed spin selection rules and changed spectral states of the dimer as compared to monomer. The reaction products in the ferric–EDTA system were seen to parallel those of the previously studied ferric–NTA system; the primary products of the reaction being CO 2 , CH 2 O, Fe(II), and ethylenediaminetriacetic acid.
