A map which shows, by hatching or shading, the geographical distribution of some phenomenon in terms of absolute frequencies or percentages may usefully be supplemented by a map showing the probabilities of the observed deviations from the mean, calculated on the assumption that the true geographic distribution is uniform. Such a supplementary map helps guard against attaching geographic significance to random variations.
