A rolling process has been developed to produce ultrafine ferrite in the surface layers of steel strip. Microscopic examination of the rolled steel revealed that the ultrafine ferrite formed by means of a strain induced transformation. Comparison with a model Ni–30 wt-%Fe alloy subjected to the same rolling schedule suggested that the ultrafine ferrite formed on the substructure in the deformed material. This rolling process is termed strain induced transformation rolling.
