H. J. Goldsmid London: Temple Press Books Ltd. 1964. Pp. x + 240. Price 70s. This book starts with an analysis of the behaviour of a thermojunction as a means of refrigeration, introduces the ‘figure of merit’, and proceeds with an account of the specific heat of solids, their thermal conductivity and band structure, and the transport of electrons in metals and semiconductors. There is then a discussion of the dependence of the figure of merit on the basic semiconductor parameters in the non-degenerate and partially degenerate cases, for both intrinsic and extrinsic material.
