A quantitative model for the evaluation of the heights of static fission barriers is formulated within the framework of the macroscopic-microscopic approach. In order to describe the main properties (at the ground state and at the saddle point) of superheavy nuclei, a high-dimensional deformation space is used. In the present paper we systematically calculate fission barrier heights Bf for even-even heavy and superheavy nuclei in the range of proton numbers 92Z126 and neutron numbers 134N192. Comparisons with experimental data and different theoretical calculations are also shown. The dependence on Bf of fully incorporated, nonaxiality, and reflection-asymmetric degrees of freedom is discussed.
