Statistical moments have been widely used over the last 20 years to characterize the shape of chromatographic peak profiles. This work is concerned with testing the accuracy of the numerical integration method for determining statistical moments over a wide range of varying experimental conditions. Simulated peak profiles, whose moments can be calculated exactly from their mathematical functions, are used. Statistical moments measured using the numerical integration method are then compared with these mathematically exact results. Elution of low molecular weight hydrocarbons (C 1 -C 5 ) on a stationary phase of n-octadecane using gas-liquid chromatography is carried out, with statistical moments for these mixtures being determined from the experimental peak profiles using the numerical integration and exponentially modified Gaussian methods.
