The interaction of hCG and FSH in the ovarian augmentation reaction was investigated using a tritiated FSH preparation in hypophysectomized immature female rats. hCG and FSH treatment increased ovarian uptake of FSH as treatment with estrogen alone had been shown to do in previous experiments. hCG and FSH together also markedly stimulated ovarian estrogen secretion. This suggests that one of the roles of hCG in the ovarian augmentation reaction is related to enhanced estrogen production which acts locally to increase ovarian uptake of FSH followed by stimulation of antrum formation, and an increase in ovarian wt.
