The first reported occurrence of straurolite in the Haast Schist Group is from the head of the Moeraki River, South Westland. The staurolite co‐exists with plagioclase, micas, garnet and ilmenite in quartzo‐feldspathic schist. Oxygen isotope analyses of co‐existing quartz and magnetite in metacherts associated with the staurolite indicate that a temperature of 530–550°c was attained during metamorphism.
