High Cliffy Island, a small island in the north west Kimberley, is the location of hundreds of stone structures which I began to record in the dry season of 1985. One of these was subsequently excavated. This paper examines the origin of the structures, their function and the implications for changes in social relations in this area in the recent prehistoric past. Some of the features unique to this group of islands which may account for the presence and density of the structures are discussed.
