A novel centrosymmetric chairlike conformation of the central Rh4S4 framework (shown on the right) is present in the title compound. The D2h-symmetric S4 ligand shows the bonding characteristics of cyclobutadiene, but its structure resembles that calculated for the free neutral S4 molecule. This ligand is stabilized by the two RhRh bonds.
