The interpretation of observed ‘anomalous’ relative intensities of the hyperfine components of interstellar HCN |j=1->0| transitions requires a knowledge of the hyperfine selective collisional rates. Unfortunately two recent calculations of collisional-rate coefficients produced large discrepancies in the results. Full close coupling rates have been calculated here and the causes of these discrepancies have been discussed.
