A new mechanism by means of which a fluid interface between two immiscible liquids can become unstable is described. This instability is somewhat similar to the well-known Helmholtz instability but important differences exist. In the present instance it is shown that the parallel flow of liquids may stabilize density gradients. The analysis is compared with the Saffman—Taylor instability and potential applications of the theoretical results are suggested.
