Key result
Lyme myocarditis presents with AV block in ~90% of cases and improves with early antibiotics.
Why the study?
Lyme myocarditis is a cardiac manifestation of Lyme disease characterized mainly by AV block, with early antibiotic treatment leading to favorable prognosis.
Case Report
This case report highlights the potential use of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in the evaluation of Lyme myocarditis.
Lyme disease is the most common vector borne illness in North America. The causative organism is mainly Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted by ticks. Lyme myocarditis is the cardiac manifestation of lyme disease which usually occurs after 1 to 2 months of acquiring the infection1. The most common manifestation of Lyme myocarditis is AV block occurring in 90% of the cases. Early treatment of Lyme myocarditis with antibiotics has favourable prognosis, with complete resolution of conduction disease in most patients.
