N- and S-doped C-encapsulated CeO 2 with a hinge-like nanostructure (CeO 2 @N,S–C HN) has been obtained by using a Ce-based metal–organic framework (Ce-MOF-808) as a precursor. Due to the synergistic effects of its special structure and N,S-doped C layer, CeO 2 @N,S–C HN exhibits high activity of photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution. Density functional calculations are used to obtain a fundamental understanding of the high H 2 production rate of CeO 2 @N,S–C HN.
