An account is given of a yarn-on-yarn abrasion test developed for use on continuous–filament rope yarns. It involves application of a reciprocating motion to two yarn sections wrapped helically together under tension. Different modes of behaviour were found under more severe and less severe abrasion conditions. Tests performed under the less severe conditions yield reproducible results with acceptably low variability. Tests made on two nylon and two polyester–fibre yarns, dry and wet, are reported. A statistical evaluation of test data is included. More detailed results will be given in later papers.
