The expression for the force exerted on a scattering sphere by a plane progressive wave is computed by making use of the general formulation derived by P. J. Westervelt. The expression is general in the sense that it allows for complex refractive index and variation of the relative effective densities of the sphere to that of the surrounding medium. The numerical calculations are confined to the case of “hard” and “soft” spheres only.
