2.4 GHz bio-radar with phase-locked loop improves noncontact vital sign measurement beyond 30 cm.
Why the study?
The performance of bio-radar systems for noncontact vital sign measurement is limited by phase noise leakage of the local oscillator at distances beyond 30 cm.
The addition of a phase-locked loop to a 2.4 GHz bio-radar system improves its performance for noncontact vital sign measurement.
May support remote vital sign monitoring development; hypothesis-generating and requires clinical validation before practice adoption.
This letter presents a novel bio‐radar system with phase‐locked loop (PLL) for noncontact measurement of vital sign. As the leakage of the phase noise of local oscillator (LO) through antenna is dominant factor for the distances larger than about 30 cm, the performance of a bio‐radar system can be improved with the PLL employment. The proposed bio‐radar and PLL are implemented by using conventional commercial components, and the measured result shows that the bio‐radar system performance is greatly improved with a PLL without any additional digital signal processing.

Myoung et al. (2010) studied this question. 2.4 GHz bio-radar system with phase-locked loop (PLL) was evaluated on System performance for noncontact measurement of vital signs. A 2.4 GHz bio-radar system with a phase-locked loop greatly improved performance for noncontact measurement of vital signs at distances larger than 30 cm without additional signal processing.
