The photopotentials of passive films formed on copper in sodium hydroxide solutions have been measured using high power mercury—xenon sources of various wavelengths after various periods of illumination. The film exhibits logarithmic growth kinetics and a positive photopotential. The variation of photopotential with wavelength indicates that the films formed behave as p type semiconductors. The influence of benzotriazole and ferrous sulphate inhibitors was also studied.
