Compounds (Bu 4 N)[2-B 10 H 9 {NH=C(NHR)CH 3 }] − are obtained by reactions of the tetrabutylammonium salt of the [2-B 10 H 9 (N≡CCH 3 )] − anion with aliphatic and aromatic primary amines RNH 2 (R = n -C 3 H 7 , n -C 4 H 9 , cyclo -C 5 H 9 , C 6 H 5 , cyclo -C 6 H 11 , n -C 6 H 13 , C 7 H 7 , C 8 H 8 NH 2 , C 6 H 4 NO 2 , and C 18 H 37 ) and identified by IR, ESI/MS, and NMR ( 1 H, 11 B, and 13 C) spectroscopy. The structures of the amidine-type derivatives [2-B 10 H 9 { Z -NH=C(NH- cyclo -C 5 H 9 )CH 3 }] − and [2-B 10 H 9 { Z -NH=C(NH-C 7 H 7 )CH 3 }] − are determined by X-ray diffraction.
