A three-year project has provided previously unavailable physiological activity data for Pacific Northwest RedDelicious apples held in typical commercial controlled atmosphere storage conditions. Recorded data indicated thatrespiration rates were lower than previously reported. Reducing the oxygen concentration from 2% to 1% caused adecrease in respiration rate of stored Red Delicious apples by approximately one-third while CO2 and temperature wereheld constant at 1% and 1C, respectively. Increasing CO2 to 2% while temperature was maintained at 1C also reducedrespiration activity, but to a lesser extent.
