MEASUREMENTS for corn (Zea mays L.) breakage susceptibility by centrifugal impact and by CK-2M Stein* breakage tests were performed on widely grown corn-belt inbreds and hybrids grown over a 4-year period. Breakage susceptibility varied significantly among genotypes. High-temperature dried corn was two to six times more susceptible to breakage than low-temperature dried corn. The percentage of floaters, an index of kernel hardness, varied significantly among genotypes, but was not correlated with breakage susceptibility for low-temperature dried corn. Test weight decreased and 100-kernel dry matter weight increased as the percentage of floaters increased.
