Type II papillary histology is linked to ~273% worse cancer-specific survival versus clear cell RCC.
Why the study?
The prognostic significance of histology in patients with renal cell carcinoma and inferior vena cava thrombus was not well defined.
Does type II papillary histology predict poorer outcomes compared to clear cell histology in patients with RCC and IVC thrombus?

Does type II papillary histology predict poorer outcomes compared to clear cell histology in patients with RCC and IVC thrombus?
Hazard Ratio: 3.73
Absolute Event Rate: 0% vs 53.6%
p-value: p=0.003
In patients with RCC and IVC thrombus, type II papillary histology is an independent predictor of significantly worse cancer-specific and recurrence-free survival compared to clear cell histology.

Hypothesis-generating for histology-specific prognosis in RCC with IVC thrombus; prospective validation needed before practice change.
Kim et al. (2012) conducted a cohort in Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombus (n=74). Type II papillary histology vs. Clear cell histology (cRCC) was evaluated on Cancer-specific survival (CSS) (HR 3.73, p=0.003). Type II papillary histology independently predicted worse cancer-specific survival (HR 3.73; P=0.003) and recurrence-free survival (HR 3.15; P=0.015) compared to clear cell RCC.
