Negative self‐statements may undermine the confidence of people who are mentally handicapped in using the skills they possess. This paper describes a therapeutic approach designed to help such individuals challenge any negative self‐statements and develop confidence in their social and community living abilities. A case study is presented in some detail to illustrate the treatment methods.
