(Lancet. 2017;389:2105–2116) Postpartum hemorrhage is the most common cause of maternal death throughout the world. Studies in trauma patients have found tranexamic acid to be effective in decreasing mortality due to hemorrhage. Based on these studies, the World Health Organization has recommended the use of tranexamic acid for postpartum hemorrhage when uterotonic therapies have been ineffective. However, data on tranexamic acid use in parturients is lacking. This large scale, randomized, double-blind study took place in 21 countries from March 2010 to April 2016 and sought to study the effect of giving tranexamic acid to women with postpartum hemorrhage.
