This book on surgical exposure of deep-lying structures of the extremities would lose much of its charm and usefulness without the author's preface and introduction. In these few pages the purposes of the author are beautifully and forcibly portrayed. It is his intent not only to lead the surgeon to the lesion most anatomically but to show the operator how to extend his incisions. The text is graphic throughout and is interspersed generously with the author's comments from well tried experience. Detailed directions are given for each approach, and the intensely practical discussions are well correlated with the drawings. The body of the text is well outlined and headed and paragraphed; all known methods of exploiting anatomic pathways, especially the cleavage lines and spaces, are described fully and graphically. The author's manner is conversational throughout, a feature which makes for easy reading and comprehending. His purpose is plainly that of
