The atlas is an eloquent testimony of this kind of evidence on which many of our ideas of gonadal histogenesis have been based in the past, not always perhaps with the success and certainty we would have wished.Sadly it is not yet possible to observe continuously individual cells through successive phases in their life-history and amongst their relatives in their 'house. This form of pictorial time-lapse histology does however emphasize changes in distribution of activity such as shifts in the site of formation of primordial fol- licles.Nevertheless it cannot really analyse events more than one can obtain by glimpses at intervals. The text is clear and concise but it suffers from limitation in the depth of its interpretation for this very reason. The atlas is a valuable record, carefully compiled and accurately recorded and will provide a time-base of events of considerable use to investigators of primate gonads.
