The theoretical “thin‐plate” analysis of axisymmetrically loaded flat circular plates is extended to a “thick‐plate” solution by including shear between the load and support rings. The effect of friction at the contacts is included and shown to be important. Stresses for different overhangs and different coefficients of friction are evaluated. Stress‐volume and stress‐area integrals are used to determine material unit strengths. Some relevant experimental work is also reported.
