Summary A new blood parasite—Nycteria medusiformis n.gen.n.sp.—of insectivorous bats (Nycteris capensis) is described. Gametocytes only are present in the blood, and infected erythrocytes show filaments protruding from the surface. Tissue schizonts are found in parenchyma cells of the liver, superficially resembling the pre-erythrocytic schizonts of Plasmodium falciparum, but differing essentially in the structure of the nuclei.
