Site-specific recombination events have been documented in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and in most cases the rearrangements resulting from these events have profound consequences for the biology of the organism. As an approach to evaluating the mechanism of such recombination events in a eukaryotic cell, we are examining the specialized recombination system encoded by the 2-micron circle plasmid present in the yeast Saccharomyces.
