Meeting report reports translational barriers for liquid biopsy in cancer patients, highlighting the need to integrate fluid biomarkers into routine clinical practice.
Despite breakthrough discoveries in biomarker research, implementing them into clinical practice remains a challenge, limiting research benefits for cancer patients. This limitation is also true for the promising field of “liquid biopsy”, which involves analyzing tumor cells or tumor cell products in the blood or other fluids (e.g., urine or cerebrospinal fluid) of cancer patients. The advent of liquid biopsy has opened a new avenue in cancer diagnostics, as highlighted in the latest Nature Milestones Cancer edition in 2020 [ 1 ].
