Highlights• The transition towards commercialized market-oriented systems is driven by infrastructure development and accessibility.• There is a tendency for ‘deagrarianisation’, i.e. a decoupling of household livelihoods from land starts to occur.• While commercialization raises income and food security, it exposes households to risk: market, debt and community loss.• Initial market integration can enhance inequality within a village if resource endowment and access is unbalanced.
