Key result
Early postoperative blood transfusion is linked to a ~1.8-point lower 3-day Cumulated Ambulation Score.
Why the study?
Factors influencing the three-day postoperative Cumulated Ambulation Score in older adults with proximal hip fractures were not well understood.
Observational (n=299)
No
Pre-injury physical function and perioperative general condition, such as blood transfusion and surgical procedure, significantly affect early postoperative mobility in older adults with hip fractures.
Associated factors may inform risk stratification after hip fracture; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective confirmation before practice change.

Toriyama et al. (2025) conducted an observational in Proximal hip fractures (n=299). Blood transfusion during the first 3 postoperative days vs. No blood transfusion was evaluated on 3-day postoperative Cumulated Ambulation Score (3-day CAS) (MD -1.83, 95% CI -2.42 to -1.24, p=<0.01). Blood transfusion during the first 3 postoperative days (MD -1.83), surgery type, and pre-admission motor FIM score were independently associated with the 3-day postoperative Cumulated Ambulation Score.
