The intensity ratio of the 004 to the 002 diffraction line, I(004)/I(002), was measured for graphitizing C atoms, non-graphitizing C atoms, carbon blacks and a neutron-irradiated carbon. The values of I(004)/I(002) are different for different C atoms even when they have the same interlayer spacing d002. For example, at the same value d002 = 3.40 Å, I(004)/I(002) is about 0.80 for a graphitizing carbon, while only about 0.45 for a non-graphitizing glass-like carbon. Carbon blacks have values between graphitizing and non-graphitizing C atoms. The ratio I(004)/I(002), as well as the interlayer spacing, is a useful parameter for characterizing the structure of C atoms.
