Patterns of size variation between sex and among plumage classes of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) were examined by measuring 10 variables on museum study skins. Using multivariate statis- tical techniques, a field method was devised to correctly identify the sex of 98.1% of bald eagles examined. Plumage maturation in this species and the problems associated with previous descriptions of plumage succession are discussed.
